2017 - Roof Replacement
May of 2017 we hired Kirt Tavis to replace the shingles on our roof and garage. I was planning for solar and did not want to put solar over a roof that I put on in 1994. In 1994 I put on 30 year singles and they were still in good shape, but solar panels have over a 20 year life. I selected 50 year Owens Corning shingles.
While our roof was off we got hit with a microburst in Addison. Almost everyone around me lost at least part of their roof, mine was already off. We did sustain other damage that required replacement of siding, facia and windows. I was still in Williston when it hit, June retreated to the basement, she thought the roof was coming off.

By the end of June the new roof was on and we were ready for solar.
I also had rubber roofing installed on the flat portion of the roof in front of the master bedroom bay window.
2018 - Solar
April of 2018 I contracted Telsa to install solar. The total system is 11KW, with 16 panels on the garage south roof and 18 panels on the house east roof. The system utilizes 2 inverters one for each array.
I sized the system to produce 75% of what we use for electricity.

I have tracked our solar performance from 2019 through 2024, we typically produce 80% of our actual use.

Amazingly it has been pretty much on target to the 75% design point.
2019 - Battery Backup
November of 2019 I contracted SunCommon to install two Tesla PowerWall2s in our house. Each PW2 is 13.5kWh. Our home uses approximately 30kWh per day. During a power outage we would conserve to about 1/2 that rate such that we expect we could go 2 days on the batteries without charging. If we get any sun at all they will recharge from the solar even if the grid is still out. Recharge is typically 3 or 4 hours of sun.

The install included:
-125A Solar Generation Panel
-Gateway Panel
-200A Isolation Panel
-Two 14.4K Powerwall2s
The performance of the PWs has been amazing. If the power goes off, we switch to batteries so fast we don't even know the power went out.
We have been very pleased with the batteries.
With the Solar and Batteries I had to make a drawing to keep it all straight.
